: Food allergies: milk and egg white

A cow's milk allergy is hypersensitive to milk proteins. Cow's milk allergy is the most common cause of food allergies in infants and young children. Children who are not or only partially breastfed and whose families have more allergies are at higher risk of developing a cow's milk allergy. Certain proteins in milk are responsible, which are only insufficiently broken down in the child's intestine and to which the body can react allergically. The symptoms are varied and range from diarrhea, vomiting and rash to neurodermatitis. In order to avoid a nutrient deficiency by avoiding milk and dairy products, which contain a lot of calcium, you should get detailed advice from a specialist or a nutritionist or dietician. The most important function of calcium in the human body is to build and maintain teeth and bones.

Dealing with milk

Cow's milk and cow's milk products should not be avoided as a preventive measure, but only if there is a medical indication to do so. A skin test or blood analysis can be used to prove a cow's milk allergy. If the suspicion has been confirmed, parents must in future absolutely feed their infant without cow's milk. So-called therapeutic hydrolysates can be used as a substitute for cow's milk. In these special products, the protein is so severely split that it can usually no longer trigger allergies. Hydrolyzates are available in pharmacies, for example. If a cow's milk allergy only occurs in adulthood, it can be assumed that the intolerance will persist permanently. In the case of infants and small children, on the other hand, it is possible that the overreaction of the immune system weakens over time, so that after a few years they can tolerate milk again without any problems.

Hypoallergenic foods

Hypoallergenic foods, i.e. foods with reduced allergen content, can possibly delay the onset of an allergy. However, if there is a proven milk protein allergy, hypoallergenic milk (HA milk) is not an alternative, as it also contains milk protein.

Dairy-free nutrition for older children and adults

If there is a cow's milk allergy, older children and adults should cut milk from the menu. To prevent calcium deficiency, foods rich in calcium should be preferred. Soy milk and other soy products (soy yoghurt, soy pudding) are recommended, as long as there is no soy intolerance. Often, however, it is not possible to do without an additional drug administration of calcium.

Why is a lactose intolerance not an allergy?

In the case of lactose intolerance, the enzyme lactase is insufficient or no longer available in the body. As a result, the lactose cannot be broken down in the body and only insufficiently digested. In this case, the consumption of dairy products causes significant digestive disorders with diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.

Lactose intolerance is not an allergy. In contrast to cow's milk allergy, which is associated with an immunological reaction of the body to the various milk proteins, lactose intolerance has an enzyme deficiency. If there is a milk protein allergy in addition to lactose intolerance, lactose-free products must not be consumed.
