What is alkaline fasting?

Base fasting was developed in 1997 by the Wacker family. This cure is primarily used to deacidify the body. By changing your diet, you also lose a few kilos of weight while fasting.

This is how alkaline fasting works

With an alkaline diet, you only eat alkaline foods such as fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts and kernels or mushrooms. Everything that is acidic is avoided, essentially grain and animal protein.

In addition, one drinks two to three liters of liquid every day, namely still water, better still spring water and tea made from local herbs. Black, green, white or rooibos tea are not suitable for base fasting.

The theory: protein-rich (animal) foods and grains produce acids in the body. If there are too many, they can no longer be excreted via the kidneys and intestines, but the bases take over their neutralization. If the minerals that are quickly available in the blood are used up, the organism falls back on basic potassium, magnesium and calcium from muscles, bones and teeth.

The consequences are cramps, osteoporosis, tooth decay, cardiac arrhythmias, allergies, gout or neurodermatitis.

The acid-base balance should be restored through alkaline fasting, by avoiding acids as far as possible and increasing the intake of bases. Fasting in the sense of starvation does not have to be done with alkaline fasting, but you have to be careful what you eat.

Alkaline fasting can help you lose weight and eat more consciously. Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a wholesome diet, as is the avoidance of sugar, alcohol and white flour products.

Alkaline fasting also plays a (researched) role in osteoporosis therapy, because it is assumed that excess acids release calcium from the bones and so the bone strength decreases in the long term.

Risks of alkaline fasting

Alkaline fasting is only carried out for a limited period of time, so deficiency symptoms are unlikely, but permanent avoidance of grain and dairy products could lead to some in the long term.

The over-acidification theory is scientifically not tenable, because various buffer systems in the body regulate the acid-base balance permanently. The connection between acidification and the development of diseases has also not been scientifically proven.

In any case, “base-promoting” powders or tablets are unnecessary and often expensive.

Base fasting: conclusion

The balancing effect of alkaline fasting on the acid-base balance and the healing effect on diseases have not been proven. The body can help itself very well, especially if you eat fruit and vegetables regularly and drink plenty of fluids (2 liters per day) in order to promote the excretion of the metabolic acid via the kidneys.

However, the principle of "alkaline fasting" contains some important aspects of healthy nutrition and can therefore be tried out over a limited period of time as an introduction to a more conscious diet. For pregnant women, people with chronic end-stage disease or with eating disorders it is Alkaline fasting not suitable.
