Why is urine yellow or white

This is what urine tells you about your health | Extreme yellow or red?
Then off to the doctor!

It all depends on the color and the smell ...

Have you already peeked into the toilet bowl today? You should do! With a pee check you can easily draw conclusions about your state of health.

"In the best case, the urine is clear and light yellow," says the German Society for Urology (DGU). "If the urine is red, you should definitely see a urologist," said the Munich urologist Dr. Friedemann Meisse on BILD. "This can be an indication of bleeding within the urinary tract that requires clarification."

A reddish color of the urine in the sense of blood could indicate bladder cancer, but it could also be a sign of kidney or prostate cancer. The main cause of bloody urine is usually a bladder infection. The red color can also indicate an inflammation of the prostate or kidneys.

However, temporarily reddish urine could also be due to the consumption of beetroot, blueberries or rhubarb, as well as blood-thinning medication or antibiotics. In women, menstrual blood may appear in the urine during their period.

“Dark yellow to orange urine could indicate a liver or biliary tract disease. Cloudy urine could be a sign of urinary tract infections and / or urinary stone disease, ”said Dr. Meisse. In addition to the color, you should also know how to interpret the smell of the urine.

“If the urine smells atypical - for example sweet and sour - this could be an indication of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. If it smells of ammonia, it indicates a urinary tract infection; Certain foods, such as the consumption of asparagus, can also produce typical “sulphurous” urine smells, ”said the urologist.

Unpleasant urine odor can therefore also have harmless causes.

And why does the color of the urine change during the day?

“In the morning, the urine usually has a stronger, darker tint because we drink less and excrete less at night, so the urine is more concentrated in the morning. However, there is a range of variation depending on the frequency and amount of drinking per unit of time, so that initially no reliable conclusions can be drawn about possible pathological changes, " Wolfgang Bühmann, Scientific Editor of the Professional Association of German Urologists, on BILD.

Little pee customer

Colorless clear: You are drinking more than enough fluids. Light yellow: A light yellow color in the urine is considered normal and shows that you are drinking enough. Dark yellow: A dark yellow urine indicates a lack of fluids. You should drink a lot. If the kidney and bladder are flushed through, the urine will turn light yellow again. Orange to brown: Orange-brown urine can indicate an extreme lack of fluids (dehydration). A permanent brown discoloration can be a sign of diseases of the liver, biliary tract or pancreas. Red to red-brown: Red urine is an alarm signal and indicates blood in the urine. Just one drop can turn the urine pink and be a sign of a serious urological disease: inflammation or cancer of the urinary tract. Cloudy to milky white: Milky whitish urine with cloudiness can indicate an infection of the urinary tract, but also sexually transmitted diseases. Foamy: Foamy urine usually means that there is too much protein in the urine and that the kidneys are not functioning properly. The cause can be high blood pressure or diabetes. Noticeable odor: Fresh urine is usually almost odorless. Eating asparagus, onions or garlic can cause a noticeable but harmless sulfur odor. A sweetish acetone odor can indicate diabetes, and in women a fishy odor can indicate a vaginal infection.
