If you get an error message when you turn on iMessage or FaceTime

To use iMessage or FaceTime, you need to activate these apps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you get an error message during activation, do the following.

Occasionally, when you activate iMessage or FaceTime, you will see one of the following messages:

  • Wait for activation.
  • Activation failed.
  • An error occurred during activation.
  • Login failed. Check your network connection and try again.
  • Cannot connect to iMessage server. Try again.

Check device settings

  1. Make sure you're connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. If you're using an iPhone, you'll need to text your phone number on for iMessage and FaceTime. Depending on the network operator, these SMS charges may apply.
  2. Go to Settings> General> Date & Time, then make sure your time zone is set correctly.

Deactivate and reactivate iMessage and FaceTime

  1. Go to Settings> Messages, then turn off iMessage.
  2. Go to Settings> FaceTime, then turn off FaceTime.
  3. Restart the device:
  4. Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.

FaceTime is not available in all countries or regions.
