Should be fifth grade in middle school

Service portal Baden-Wuerttemberg

Children differ in their performance, their motivation, their strengths and weaknesses and thus also in their chances of success in the different secondary schools.

When making a decision, the child's level of learning and development potential must be taken into account.

Information event for parents of the 4th grade

In the first half of year 4, usually until the start of the autumn break, the primary school organizes an information evening.

School management of Werkrealschule / Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium, community school and vocational school provide information on this evening about the educational mandate, working methods, performance requirements, qualifications and connections of their educational institutions.

The primary school recommendation

At the beginning of the second half of the school year in grade 4, the teachers make a recommendation for the child as to which type of secondary school each child should attend after primary school. This primary school recommendation is based on an overall educational assessment that takes into account the child's previous learning and performance development, his learning and work behavior and his learning potential.

A recommendation for the Werkreal- and Hauptschule, the Realschule or the Gymnasium is made if the performance in the individual subjects and the subject groups suggest that the requirements of the secondary school type will be met. The community school is included in this recommendation.

The semi-annual information for class 4 provides guidance. The requirements of the grammar school are usually met if the subjects German and mathematics are at least good-satisfactory on average. The requirements of the Realschule are usually met if the subjects German and mathematics are at least satisfactory on average.

The primary school recommendation is issued together with the half-year information for class 4.

When registering in the secondary school, the primary school recommendation must be presented. If the primary school recommendation differs, the school management can offer the parents a consultation. You do not need to present the half-year information for class 4 when registering.

The special advisory process

If further decision-making aid is required after the primary school recommendation has been issued, parents can make use of the special advisory procedure. You have the option of additional advice from a specially qualified advisory teacher. If necessary, general aptitude tests can be carried out. The test results are discussed with the parents.
