Why is it illegal to say hello from the Nazis?

Forbidden greetings and slogans

Start / LAWS AGAINST RIGHT / Forbidden greetings and slogans

Forbidden greetings:

  • Hitler salute (right arm outstretched, also called "German greeting" under National Socialism) has been forbidden in Germany and Austria since 1945.
  • The "Kühnengruss" introduced by the former neo-Nazi Michael Kühnen - a modification of the Hitler salute - is also forbidden.
  • "Sieg Heil!" (Party congress and mass slogans of the Nazis)
  • "Hail Hitler!" (spoken greeting by the Nazis)
  • "With German greetings" (letter form of greeting from the Nazis)

Prohibited slogans:

  • "My (our) honor is loyalty" (slogan of the SS, the "Schutzstaffel" of the Nazis)
  • "Blood and Honor" (slogan of the Hitler Youth, HJ)
  • "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer" (used in connection with the "Anschluss" of Austria to Nazi Germany, based on "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Kaiser" from 1873)
  • "Rotfront verrecke" (what is meant here is the "Rote Frontkampfbund" in the Weimar Republic, which the Nazis wanted to remove by force)
